TEDx Ottawa ‘’Changing the Narrative’’

I was asked to create a piece of art for the most recent TEDx event at the Algonquin commons theatre on October 23rd. The theme of the event was ‘’Changing the Narrative’’, a theme that is very close to my heart.
In the weeks leading up to the event, I was invited to attend the speakers practice sessions and brainstorm ideas for my painting based on their talks. Little did they know, this method is already part of my personal art practice! Whenever I need inspirations or if I want to learn about a particular subject, my first instinct is to look for a TED talk and take doodle notes with key words which I then use as a theme for my artwork.

For this particular piece, I noticed they all have the same goal of fixing broken systems. There we're a lot of common themes of integrating more solidarity and compassion into the way we do things collectively. I wanted to relate the piece to the ‘’Self’ as I feel it’s important to pay attention to what is happening within in order to move forward together. Shifting into a new sense of self. The hand is reframing itself to a more stable line. It's reaching for blooming flowers as a representation of hope that we keep innovating for positive change.

Always reach for the truest beauty that lives inside you by changing the narrative of your old stories. Reframing into a new state of being.
